So Much More Than “Just a Secretary”

By Vicky Bach Years ago, while working as a Branch Secretary for a cemetery services company, I had a phrase uttered to me that would be repeated many times, in different contexts, throughout my career. In the staff lunchroom one of the salesmen, James, was boldly rating the importance of everyones roles in the office and placing individuals on his imaginary rating scale. Management was, of course, the top of the food-chain. This was followed by the sales force who, according to James, was single-handedly responsible for bringing in clients and, in turn, money. Administration was relegated to the lowest level of the pyramid. You dont make any money for the company, he said to me. Your role is a liability on the books. Youre just a secretary. Now, even though James was somewhat of a pompous person in most things he said and did, this wasnt the only time I heard or even felt the sting of these words. It is just the incident that I remember most clearly. This mantra has been repeated in different ways by better people in varying industries throughout my administrative career. It has been revealed in ways other than as a verbal phrase. It shows in my compensation, in my job evaluations and in the way I am treated in the office environment. The thought process, throughout companies large and small, seems to be: Administration doesnt directly make any money for the company, therefore administration is less valuable. I think theyre wrong. You, the Administrative Assistant, are the backbone of the company for which you work. You are the person that keeps everything running smoothly while juggling ten tasks at once. The value you add to a company is demonstrated in the many roles you take on in your job. Its impossible to think that youre just a Secretary when you consider the expertise you have in the following areas: Customer Service You are the biggest part of customer service because youre usually the first contact a customer has when communicating with your company. You make a good first impression on that customer and make him decide its worth doing business with you. Often you, the Administrative Assistant, know the customer better than the rest of the company, especially if this client is a frequent purchaser or visitor. You recognize his voice on the telephone and call him by name. You know where the client likes to be seated in the boardroom and that she prefers a glass of water over coffee. You often know about the clients personal life, because you are the one they feel comfortable chatting with when they call the office or when they are stopping in for an appointment. Heck, you might even know their kids names! This is what makes you such an important part of a companys customer service practice. You take the time to put that smile in your voice with every phone call you answer and you get to know the customers. A company cant put a price on the value you bring to customer service. Its too high! Sales You probably know your companys product or service as well as the CEO. Youve typed the reports, youve answered the clients enquiries and you know the lingo. Customers know you can answer general questions about the product. They also trust you to put them through to the right person when they have enquiries you cant assist them with (remember, youre a customer service expert!). Just because you never see a commission cheque, it doesnt mean youre not one of the companys top salespeople. Marketing How many merge letters have you typed? How many envelopes have you stuffed? How many business cards and forms have you designed and ordered? Do you promote your companys brand when you answer the phone? (Good morning, XYZ Company.) Of course you do and these are all aspects of good marketing. You are a huge part of Marketing for the company you represent. Accounting Whether or not you handle the payables and receivables in your office, you probably have to stick to a budget within your department. Maybe you handle the billing in a lawyers office or are responsible for costing the office supplies to the appropriate department. You could be the person who prints and mails the invoices or maybe you receive the cheques and prepare the deposit for the bank. We all have a part in accounting, in some way or another, when working in an office. You, the Administrative Assistant, get to add Accounting to your giant list of abilities. Administration This one is a no-brainer! You type, you file, you answer the phone, you greet the customers, you investigate and problem solve. In fact, you can probably do all of these tasks at the same time. To the company you work for, youre worth your weight in gold. Youre so much more than just a Secretary. Youre an Administrative Genius! Vicky Bach is the owner of Administrative Avenue - - articles, advice, tips and tricks for all Administrative Assistants. Advanced Article Marketing-Attract New Cllients by Leveraging Your Present Articles

By Judy Cullins Maybe you’ve heard about article marketing. And even tried it. And, you may be missing out on recycling your articles to give you much more visibility than to just submit them to article directories and place them on your web ssite. Here’s 10 Ways 1. Upload to your web site new articles every two weeks. This gives your visitors a good reason to return and spend more time on your web site. Your audience loves free content and so do the search engines. More time, eventually more buying. 2. Recheck your article titles. Be sure to make the first words search engine friendly with key words that people put into Google to search for your topic. When you Google your name you’ll see what the search engines like. They like benefit words and phrases. They like key words and phrases. 3. Take article titles from your ezine and add them to your site under ezine’s archived favorites. More titles that search engines will see. This works for tips too. To see this in action, visit a web site that does this. 4. Transform questions from your subscribers and potential clients into a three-part article including three questions and your answers in one topic each. You can also submit these to the article directories and your web site. Make sure the title has key words or benefits. For example, one of mine: “Advanced Article Marketing-Three Questions and Answers.” 5. Turn your articles into fre.e special bonus reports. No matter the length, your article can be the reason people buy larger packages from you–they want this particular information. Keep a folder called “Special Reports” in addition to “Articles to Submit.” Each time you create a new product be sure to comb this goldmine. Naturally, you’ll want to add a bit to change the article you already submit. Add a story, some resources. Be sure to give it a title page that includes your other products list and links to buy. 5. Create an eBook as a ezine subscription bonus to double your sign ups. For example see the three categories in this 20-page eBook “20 High Octane Ways to Write, Publish, and Market your Book.” Opt-in subscriptions doubled each month from this one effort. 6. Combine short tips into a new article that have a focus on one topic. You can share the tips separately with other ezine publishers and then use the tips in an article to submit as a new article. 7. Sell information products from your articles. Be sure to add segways and transitions so it sounds like a book, rather than an article. That; means you need a beginning hook and thesis, a middle and an end. 8. Make more affiliate sales when you write and give articles to your affiliates, especially the benefit-driven ones. “Why do this” articles are like a mini sales letter. They don’t need to be long, maybe a half a page. 9. Be a guest article contributor to other ezines. They want your articles and will come to your site to get them. Often, an email will come announcing your article was enjoyed by these ezines. That makes your own list of subscribers go way up. 10.. Submit your articles to over 130 Web Site URLs each few weeks to keep your name alive. To increase greatly your ezine subscribers and your web visitors. Advanced article marketing takes your few submissions to a few web sites over the moon–to get your site in the top 10 by search engines, and to attract your target market to your site for continued product sales and all the clients you want. Collecting Antique Glass and Porcelain Insulators

By Glyn Farber Looking for something interesting, beautiful and low cost to collect, then try antique insulators. Insulators have been used ever since Samuel Morse transmitted the first telegraph message over a short telegraph line along a railroad between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD in 1844. Glass insulators were first manufactured in the 1850s for use with telegraph lines that were rapidly expanding across America. In the 1920s electricity and telephone signals moved over open copper wire. At each pole glass insulators were used starting this popular hobby of insulator collecting. Insulators come in many sizes, shapes and colors. They were made of many different types materials including rubber, porcelain, pottery, glass, composition, fiberglass, metal, wood and mica. Glass and porcelain insulators are extensively collected by manufacturer and color. Glass insulators are usually found marked with a manufacturer or users name embossed on the insulator such as Hemingray No.9. made by the Hemingray Glass Company that was located in Muncie, Indiana. The American Telephone and Telegraph Co. embossed their insulators with AM TEL & TEL Co. Most insulators were marked on their crown or skirt. Armstrong’s, Brookfield, California, Diamond, Dominion, Hemingray, Kerr, Lynchburg, Maydwell, NEGM and Whitall Tatum are some of the more common names found on glass insulators. There are a wide variety of insulators made of porcelain, ceramic, stoneware and other related materials. Collectors primarily focus on pin-types and insulators used on early radio receiver antennas. Manufacturer names to look for are Cook, Jobson Bros., Johns-Manville, Fred M Locke, New Westminster and Varley. You can determine the age of an antique insulator by looking for any marking stamped or embossed on its surface. Sometimes the approximate age can be determined by a patent date on the insulator. The last glass insulator manufacturer in the United States was Kerr, located in Millville, NJ. Kerr stopped producing insulators in 1979. Value is determined by many factors such as condition, manufacturer, quantity made, color, age and demand by collectors. The best place to buy antique insulators is eBay. Glyn Farber has published a catalog of all known Hickey Brother Cigar Store Tokens and co-authored a book about Louisiana Trade Tokens. Diet Review - You On A Diet

By Elizabeth Ramer I am currently following You: On A Diet The Owners Manual For Waist Management written by Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen. If you watch Oprah Winfrey regularly, youve seen these 2 doctors many times. When I first bought the book, it scared me some, because I thought you had to follow the diet to their exact specifications. Unfortunately, I personally did not care for the recipes in the book and I was stuck on this fact until I realized that I could adapt the food and recipes to my liking, and it has worked out well for me. The Owners Manual For Waist Management reminds me a lot of the low fat diet I followed years ago, only it allows more fat, nuts, and oil - good oil like canola and olive oil. Anything from the produce department is allowed as a rule. Pre-packaged food is discouraged, but the diet police wont come after you if you do eat it. This easy to follow diet removes the junk from your diet the junk carbs, fat and calories. You will start to recognize high fructose corn syrup as your enemy. It encourages you to eat natural, whole foods whole grains, whole wheat, and oatmeal and advises you to stay away from white flours. Youll finally learn how to read labels, and separate fact from package advertising. Youll learn what the difference is between a package that advertises 100% whole wheat and what it actually contains. You’ll gain understanding into how your body can naturally take you to a healthy weight with the proper foods and activities. You will learn to make dieting automatic and a part of your everyday life. Youll lose inches and pounds. I started the diet in January, 2007 and at this writing, Ive lost 35 pounds and 7 inches from my waist. I do not exercise the way the You: on a Diet recommends, otherwise Im sure I would lose more inches. Youll discover that its OK to make mistakes if you make a mistake, just make a You Turn. This is important. How many times have you gone on a diet only to blow it and then just give up? A You Turn will keep you from giving up and help you to succeed on your weight loss journey. The You: on a Diet doctors stress the dangers of Omentum, a band of fat that lives around your waistline, under your stomach muscles, and the effects omentum has on all of your vital organs. Youll withdraw from sugar as well. In fact, I consider this the most critical part of the diet, and very important for me. If you can get through the first, and even the second week, you will be well on your way to eliminating sugar from your diet and you wont even miss it! The diet allows for dark chocolate occasionally. I find that when I do eat it (for me, its once a month, usually, but you can eat it more often) I enjoy it immensely. I have found that the junk food cravings we are all so familiar with go away completely. No longer do I crave Doritos and ice cream. The cravings I do have are for healthy food, and I eat them without guilt. The Owners Manual For Waist Management talks to you in laymans terms you wont need to be a rocket scientist in order to understand it. I highly suggest you buy the book and start the diet. Elizabeth Ramer has been on a diet since 2nd grade, and is following the You on a Diet weight management program. Stop by and read my blog at http://dietandweightlossprograms.com/ or subscribe to my feed http://dietandweightlossprograms.com/feed/ as I work on losing weight. Silk Orange Trees

By Kent Pinkerton A silk orange tree is a kind of artificial topiary tree adorned with real looking leaves, trunks and oranges. A silk orange tree placed at entryways and corners, or near windows gives a stylish look to your home. Silk orange trees are a great attraction in the gardens. The main advantage of a silk orange tree is that it is durable and does not lose its beauty. Further, it does not require watering and shedding, and can be easily cleaned with the help of a slightly dampened cloth. An imitation of natural orange trees, silk orange trees are generally made of high quality silk materials. They usually consist of tons of orange foliages and several hand painted foam orange fruits. Braided wood stems, foliages, and beautiful trunks add to the charm of these trees. Another special type is silk orange trees made of natural trunks and foliages. You can now buy silk orange trees in a variety of graceful styles, shapes, and sizes. In general, silk orange trees are pre-potted in terracotta containers or terracotta colored plastic pots. A wide range of baskets and planters are also available to suit any interior or exterior decoration. For best results, silk orange trees must be placed under protective covers. Besides being a perfect complement to any dcor, silk orange trees also form a perfect gift for birthdays and special occasions. The prices of silk orange trees depend on the quality of materials used in their creation. Nowadays, many of the US outlets, both local outlets and online stores, customize silk orange trees according to the need and specification of the customers, using high quality materials. Silk Trees provides detailed information on silk trees, silk palm trees, silk mimosa trees, silk ficus trees and more. Silk Trees is affiliated with Silk Floor Plants. Choosing a College Savings Plan

By Jonathon Hardcastle There are two basic types of tax-free college savings plans, the Coverdell educational savings account and the 529 savings account. Each has advantages and disadvantages depending on the situation of the individual family. 529 college savings plans allow parents, and in some cases grandparents and other family members, to contribute tax-deferred money to a savings account earmarked for college. The money gains tax-free interest and there is no tax assessed on the principle if it is withdrawn to cover eligible college expenses. The current tax rules will be in effect until 2010, but even if Congress does not reauthorize that section of the tax code, tax will still only be applied to the earnings on the account, not the principle. Every state now offers a 529 plan and some offer more than one type. For example, some states like Florida offer prepaid plans that lock in today’s tuition rates and also offer traditional savings plans. It is a misconception that signing up for a state-run college savings program requires your child to attend college in that state. All states have reciprocal agreements allowing participants to choose from a huge number of colleges all over the country. If you have chosen a prepaid plan, however, your child will only receive tuition at the rate you agreed to when you signed up regardless of what college they attend. Coverdell education savings accounts work in a similar way to Roth IRA accounts. Parents can deposit after-tax income into an account to save for college or private school (one of the unique benefits of a Coverdell account). Any interest on the account is tax-free if withdrawn for eligible educational expenses. However, unlike 529 plans, Coverdell accounts are capped at $2,000 per child. Even if the child has accounts established by grandparents or other family members, the total invested in the child’s name cannot exceed $2,000. For this reason, many families choose both a 529 plan and a Coverdell plan. Also, since Coverdell accounts are held in the child’s name, any funds not used for college will eventually be distributed to your child, not back to you. This is the opposite of 529 college savings accounts which are held in the parent’s name and can be transferred to other family members. Finally, the rules covering 529 plans are easier to understand than those covering Coverdell accounts. Families considering opening a Coverdell account should consider consulting with a tax professional to be sure they understand all the rules and tax implications. Your Strategic Thinking Coach’s Ten Questions To Diagnose Fear Of Marketing

By Glenn Ebersole Whenever I hear complaints about not attracting enough new business, I start asking many questions. As a strategic thinking business coach I need to ask those who complain many questions to find out if there is a fear of marketing that is preventing the growth of their business. In order to determine if this fear exists, I developed ten (10) questions to ask them. The ten questions are: 1. Are you afraid of rejection if you market yourself and your business? 2. Are you afraid of speaking in public about yourself and your business? 3. Are you afraid of contacting someone you have never met before to talk about your business? 4. Are you afraid to ask your clients for referrals for your business? 5. Are you afraid to ask your clients for testimonials for your business? 6. Are you afraid to develop a written strategic marketing plan for your business? 7. Are you afraid of being labeled as a salesperson? 8. Are you afraid of being held accountable for the time and money you spend on marketing your business? 9. Are you afraid of making an error and not making a perfect presentation? 10. Are you afraid of being viewed as ignorant or unqualified if you do not always have the answers to questions immediately after they are asked? As a strategic thinking business coach, I can tell you that if you answered YES to any one of the ten questions you have given yourself a perfect excuse in your mind to not market your business or yourself or to keep putting it off until tomorrow. However, a decision to not market or to continually postpone marketing yourself and your business is a dysfunctional decision, which results in little or no business growth. So there is a real need to change that faulty decision-making process to a strategic thinking process immediately. If you follow a strategic thinking process you will want to attract new business. And to attract new business and grow your business you must commit to overcoming any fear of marketing you may have. One of the best ways to overcome the fears of marketing and to become an effective marketer is to work with a business coach. Glenn Ebersole, Jr. is a multi-faceted professional, who is recognized as a visionary, guide and facilitator in the fields of business coaching, marketing, public relations, management, strategic planning and engineering. Dating: How Nice Guys Don’t Have To Finish Last

By Tonja Weimer Are you a nice guy? Do you find dating to be a challenge because girls think of you as a friend or a brother? Do you wonder why all the women you want, seem to go out with guys who are thought of as “bad boys?” If you answered yes to any of the above, you might ask yourself, what exactly do those bad boys have that you don’t have? For starters, they are probably confident. Confidence can make you very attractive, and you don’t have to act like a bad boy to have it and show it. Here are some of the qualities that a nice guy can adopt that will make you more compelling to women and you won’t have to compromise any of your values. The way to confidence for a nice guy is through some of the following: Accomplishment What are you good at? Find your skill or your talents and shine them up. Nothing is as attractive as an accomplished person. Finding this talent is not meant to be difficult. There is something that you are naturally gifted at that you probably take for granted. What do you do in your spare time? What do people come to you for? What comes easy to you but other people might find it hard if not impossible? Somewhere in the answer to those questions you may find what you can be proud of. Finances Ahhh…here is the tricky one for most men. It is true that women are attracted to rich men, but more than that, they love guys with a sense of humor, a deep set of values, and a great, promising career. When you add that to the basic attitude of confidence, it is unbeatable. If your finances are meager, don’t try and hide the fact that you must live on a budget. But can you be inventive with your ideas for dates? Women love a sense of mystery and imagination. Humor If you can see the funny bone in most situations, and you have the above qualities, you are irresistible. If you find that you laugh very little during your day, it is advisable that you find some movies you consider funny and watch those, along with TV shows that make you smile. Turn off the depressing news and lighten up by watching some humor. Career If you have a great career, or if you are taking the action steps to attain one, you will be attractive to women. If you are confused and don’t know what to do with your life, get yourself a coach or guidance counselor, get some job training, and get busy. When you are doing what you love to do; when you can take care of yourself financially; and when you have a plan for your future and you are implementing it, you will be the kind of guy women are looking for. Looking good You need to look good and smell good. Women like clean nails and hair; suits, slacks and shirts rather than jeans and Tees; and women love good shoes. It’s one of the first things they notice. Have a plan for getting to the gym at least 5 times a week or another work out schedule that keeps you in shape. Pull your spaces together Is your living environment a pig sty? Does your car look like a trash can? It’s time to clean it up, organize your things, and make a space for the woman of your dreams. You can’t meet someone until you’ve room for her. You get to keep being a nice guy. You are just going to be a nice guy with confidence. If you do the above, you will feel terrific and you will become attractive to women. Nice guys don’t have to finish last.
